Cultural Association Violeta Parra Inc.
- Chilean Folkloric Dance Group
The Chilean Folk Dance Group Violeta Parra was established in the South East suburbs of Melbourne Victoria in 1988. They pride themselves on being able to pass on the diverse cultural traditions of Chile through the art of dance and bringing a sense of excitement and joy to an audience.
Violeta Parra has been performing all over Melbourne, Victoria and Australia for the past 24 years at various Multicultural Events, Latin American Clubs (such as Copacabana) and Festivals, Aged Care Homes, Fund Raising, Community Events and even the occasional Wedding or School Function. Some of the more recent memorable performances have been the 2010 Victorian Premiere’s Gala at the Crown Casino , The Multicultural Children’s Festival, The Chilean Bicentenary Gala, the sacred mass of Teve um and various fund raising events especially run to assist the 2010 Earthquake victims of Chile.
The Dance group consists of performers as young as 6 years old as well as semi-professionals with decades of dancing experience which adds to the ever changing dynamics of each performance.
The dance group has an extensive repertoire of stunning costumes and beautifully choreographed dances from all parts of Chile such as:
The sensual, flowing dances from Easter Island
The vibrant, energetic dances from the North
The stately, elegant and traditional Cueca from Central Chile
The spiritual , nurturing dances of the indigenous Mapuche people
The delightful, heartfelt stories from the South.
The seductive moves from La Cueca Chora depicting a story from the oldest profession in the world !
The religious, colourful dances from La Tirana…
Chilean folk dancing appeals to many audiences with this range of variety and styles.
Violeta Parra has received many commendations for their performances and has appeared in numerous local newspapers and radio stations. Judith A Graley MP (State Member for Narre Warren South) recently wrote a letter of recommendation for the group stating Each event has been made special by the participation of the Cultural Association Violeta Parra because their performances have been nothing short of stunning.
